Cancian, Frank (1934-2020)
Frank Cancian (1934-2020) is an American anthropologist and documentary photographer. After an initial fieldwork on an Apache reserve, he obtained a Fulbright grant in 1957 to do fieldwork in a village in southern Italy (Lacedonia), at a time when this region was the subject of much social science research. Under the direction of his PhD supervisor, Evon Zartman Vogt Jr., he next participated in the Harvard Chiapas Project in Mexico and settled in Zinacantán. His work concerns economic anthropology, the dynamics of social inequalities and stratifications. Professor of anthropology at Stanford University from 1969, he joined the University of California in 1999, after which he researched contemporary American society (life in the university campus, Californian housecleaners).
