Hubert, Henri (1872-1927)
Henri Hubert (1872-1927), Marcel Mauss’s “work twin” and spiritual brother, was a sociologist, museologist and archaeologist who devoted himself to the study of the phenomena of transmission and transformation – from the time of objects to the time of practices and rituals and then to the time of cultures and civilizations. Most of his intellectual work was devoted to reviewing articles and books for the journal L’Année sociologique, under the direction of Émile Durkheim. In collaboration with Mauss, more specifically Hubert studied the practices related to sacrifice (1899) and magic (1904). He taught at EPHE and École du Louvre. At the Musée des Antiquités Nationales from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he set up the Comparison Room, designed as a “microcosm” of the history of cultures and techniques.

Laurent Olivier, 2020
