Hocart, Arthur Maurice (1883-1939)

Arthur Maurice Hocart (1883-1939) est un ethnographe, anthropologue et théoricien parmi les plus originaux de l’école britannique. Ayant fait de longs terrains dans plusieurs îles du Pacifique dans les années 1910, il est l’auteur d’une vaste bibliographie, dont Kings and Councillors (1936) est la monographie la plus connue. Brassant une littérature ethnographique importante qui leur confère une portée universelle, ses travaux sont à la croisée des études sur la psychologie, les émotions, le rituel et les modes de gouvernement. Contemporain « maudit » de Malinowski et de Radcliffe-Brown, il tombe pratiquement dans l’oubli jusqu’à la redécouverte de son œuvre dans les années 1960 par, entre autres, Rodney Needham.
