Tylor, Edward Burnett (1832-1917)

Edward Burnett Tylor est le premier titulaire d’une chaire d’anthropologie au Royaume-Uni, à l’université d’Oxford (1895) et une figure majeure de l’anthropologie évolutionniste victorienne. Dans son ouvrage le plus connu, Primitive Culture, publié en 1871, il vise à éclairer les origines et le développement de la culture, surtout de la religion, par l’analyse comparative d’un vaste corpus de données ethnographiques et historiques, embrassant l’humanité dans son ensemble. Parmi ses nombreuses publications on compte aussi Anahuac (1861), Researches into the Early History of Mankind and the Development of Civilization (1865), et Anthropology (1881).
