Underhill, Ruth Murray (1883-1984)
Ruth Murray Underhill (1883-1984) was an American anthropologist from the Boasian tradition. Despite her late anthropological training at Columbia University, she had a long career as a chronicler of North American Indian contexts, particularly of the tribes of the Southwest. She published more than thirty books (including those intended for the general public), the most significant of which were based on her field work within the Tohono O’odham community. She paid particular attention to women and used anthropology to criticize American society of her time.
