West-Indische Gids, De (1919-1959)

The journal De West-Indische Gids (Guide to the West Indies) was published between 1919 and 1959 by the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (Royal Netherlands Institute of Linguistics, Geography and Ethnology, created in 1851), in order to allow the publication of research on the territory and populations of the Dutch colonies in Central America, including Curacao, Suriname and the Antilles. During the first half of the 20^th century, colonial agents with an ethnographic or naturalistic vocation were among its contributors, but scientists also participated. The academic dimension of the journal grew and, from 1960 it was called Nieuwe West-Indische Gids (New Guide to the West Indies), the title still in place today.
