South African Archaeological Bulletin, The (1945- )

The South African Archaeological Bulletin was established in 1945 as an organ of the Cape Archaeological Society (then The South African Archaeological Society), founded a year earlier. The motto of the journal, making reference to “the First Man” and “the Dawn of History”, reflects the attention given mainly to archaeological excavations carried out in Africa and concerning prehistory; but some articles and especially reports and notices follow the expeditions, production and challenges of archaeological science in other contexts, in dialogue with counterpart institutions and newspapers, mainly from the British Empire and then the Commonwealth.
