Annals of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (1918- )

Created in 1918 and still in existence, the Annals of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is the organ of a major institution of Indian studies, founded a year earlier by the scholar whose name it bears, Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar (1837-1925) and based in Pune, Maharashtra (India). It participated in European orientalist networks, but wished to affirm, first of all in a colonial context, the original contribution of Indian scholars. The journal and the institute inherited the projects of the 19^th century, and in the 20^th century pursued new undertakings for the recovery, enhancement and safeguarding of ancient epics and sacred texts, in Sanskrit or in “vernacular languages”, as Bhandarkar himself expressed in the inaugural volume.
