Pitrè, Giuseppe (1841-1916)

Born in Palermo (Sicily) in 1841, Giuseppe Pitrè practised medicine there and became interested in Sicily’s popular traditions in 1868. He created the 25 volume series ’Biblioteca delle tradizioni popolari siciliane’, containing his own work. With the help of Salomone Marino, he founded the journal Archivio per lo studio delle tradizioni popolari (1882-1907/09). He was Professor of Demopsychology at the University of Palermo and Director of the Museo ethnografico Siciliano, founded in 1910 after the Mostra Etnografica Siciliana of 1892. He died in Palermo on April 10, 1916.
