Velho, Gilberto (1945-2012)
Gilberto Velho (1945-2012), a pioneer of urban anthropology, is one of the most important Brazilian anthropologists. At a time when anthropology in Brazil was hegemonically focused on the study of indigenous and peasant societies, his work developed innovative research methodologies in urban environments. Interested in subjects such as living in large cities, the urban middle classes and deviant behaviour, Velho set out to understand what he called “modern-contemporary complex societies”. His work has influenced several generations of researchers in different fields, his legacy being recognised in Brazil and beyond.
