Jan Czekanowski (1882–1965) was a Polish anthropologist, ethnographer, Africanist and Slavicist. He created the diagraphic method in human biometry and researched the ethnogenesis of the Slavs. He studied at the University of Zürich and took part in the German Central-African Expedition in 1907–1909, during which he conducted field research in the interlacustrine area of Africa. He was a professor at the University of Lwów from 1913 to 1941 and the creator of the Lwów school of physical anthropology. He was professor at the University of Poznań from 1945 to 1960. Czekanowski’s place in disciplinary history calls for renewed attention, as well as his abundant materials, including manuscript sources.
