Associação Portuguesa de Antropologia (1989- )
Since it was founded in 1989, the Associação Portuguesa de Antropologia (Portuguese Anthropological Association, APA) has aimed at promoting anthropological research and defending the place and role of anthropologists in Portuguese society. Historically and politically, the APA is heir to the democratic process initiated with the ‘Carnation Revolution’ of 1974. A dynamic learned society, the APA brings together hundreds of anthropologists, promotes major scientific events and integrates international networks. In the 21st century context of changing policies within government agencies, ensuring that anthropology is acknowledged as an autonomous science has been one of the APA’s hardest challenges.
