Romania. Recueil trimestriel consacré à l’étude des langues et des littératures romanes was founded by Paul Meyer (1840-1917) and Gaston Paris (1839-1902) in 1872. Although its articles focus mainly on questions of Romance philology and literary history (medieval texts in Romance languages), its founders also wanted to focus on the study of modern patois and folk literature. This interest was to continue until the aftermath of the First World War.
