A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and an “agrégé de Lettres Classiques”, Marc Augé obtained a doctorate in 1971. In the early 1960s, he turned to ethnology, within the framework of ORSTOM (Office de la recherche scientifique et technique d’outre-mer, now IRD), where he was director of research. He stayed in Côte d’Ivoire (1965–1969) and carried out numerous missions in Africa, mainly in Togo. In 1970 he was appointed director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), which he chaired from 1985 to 1995. Since the mid-1980s, he has diversified his fields of observation, notably making several trips to Latin America and trying to observe the realities of the contemporary world in its most immediate environment. Since many years, Marc Augé has been working on an anthropology of everyday life.
