Lorenzo Dow Turner Papers, 1906 – 1985, Amistad Research Center, Tulane University

This collection of Lorenzo Dow Turner papers encompasses, among other material, private and public correspondence, family photographs, sound recordings, annotated books, offprints, periodicals, and recording equipment. The photographic materials include approximately 100 black and white photos, circa 1911-1930s, including Turner’s portraits and candid images of him, his wife, and unidentified individuals. The collection also includes some of Turner’s field recordings in Nigeria and Benin. This part of the collection comprises 50 wire recordings and two reel-to-reel audio recordings (1951). Additional records, including 49 lacquered and aluminum discs, contain Gullah speakers’ recordings from the coast of South Carolina (1932-1933) and Brazilian Yoruba speakers (1940-1941).
