Adonis, Attis, Osiris appeared in 1906 with the title Adonis, Attis, Osiris. Studies in the History of Oriental Religion and was independent of The Golden Bough, although based on chapters from previous editions of the book. In 1913-1914, Adonis, Attis, Osiris resumed its “natural place”, this time in two volumes, as the 4th part of the 3rd edition of The Golden Bough - which would reach twelve volumes followed by an Aftermath. Frazer himself explained it in the original preface : “These studies are an expansion of the corresponding sections in my book ’The Golden Bough’, and they will form part of the third edition of that work.”
