Lavrov, Leonid Ivanovich (1909-1982)

Leonid Ivanovich Lavrov (1909-1982) was a key figure in Soviet ethnography from the 1930s onwards. While his experiences in the field and his work on the cultural history and epigraphic heritage of the Caucausus (the country of his childhood) reflected the political transformations of the USSR, he maintained a respectful attitude towards those lifestyles which seemed doomed to disappear with the communist project. It was from the 1960s that the effects of Soviet influence in this vast region became a priority subject, which he fully integrated into his own intellectual interests.
